TEHRAN – Local media are reporting that Iranian Quds Force Commander General Qassem Suleimani has been wounded in fighting in Syria. According to the same media sources, he is currently receiving medical treatment in Tehran.

Yesterday, Al-Arabiya TV claimed that Amir Mousavi, the director for the Center for Strategic Studies and International Relations in Tehran, has confirmed Suleimani was injured, and that he was in a stable condition in an unnamed hospital.

In a press conference, White House press secretary Josh Earnes said that while they have heard the news, they cannot confirm it.

Syrian opposition media reported that Suleimani was wounded about 12 days ago in clashes around Aleppo, northern Syria. So far there have been no comments from the Iranian government.

This is not the first time stories of Suleimani’s battle injuries have been circulated. There were reports in late October that claimed Suleimani was wounded in Syria; however, the Iranian army dismissed these rumors.

Iranian casualties in Syria are on the rise. Notably the death of Hussein Hamadani, a senior Iranian commander and close friends of Suleimani.

According to the same media reports, in the last two months alone, some 80 Iranian soldiers have been killed by anti-Syrian regime forces.
